Japan is well known for it's arts, and it's rich cultural heritage. The images of sumo wrestlers, woodblock prints, geisha and samurai are well established icons of Japan. However there is one indispensable pillar of Japanese traditional culture that remains to be seen by much of the world, and that is the culture of Nishikigoi and the Nishikigoi breeder of Japan.
For over a century Nishikigoi have been bred in the mountains of Niigata. Within the last century, considerable advances in the knowledge and skill of breeding the world's most expensive and exquisitely colored carp have been made. The craft has been refined and passed down from one generation to the next.
It is still possible today to witness the beauty and majesty of Nishikgoi, and the legacy and culture of the Nishikigoi breeder of Japan.
NAGAOKA, NIIGATA
The origin and birthplace of Nishikigoi was in Yamakoshi Village in Niigata prefecture, Japan.
Because of the regions heavy snow, carp were originally kept in ponds near the home as a source of food. It is from these captive carp that colored mutations started to appear, thus giving birth to the decorative Koi we love and enjoy today.
In 2005 the Yamakoshi area was annexed into the city of Nagaoka, where

Our centralized location enables us to visit farms regularly throughout the year; to monitor health and mud-pond growing conditions, assess and provide newly available stock, as well as providing a line of support and communication to our distributors, connecting them to the largest group of professional Koi breeders in the world.
